Basic requirements to apply
The company does not publish a full list of approval criteria. Based on its application flow and standard U.S. credit rules, applicants generally need to:
- Be at least 18 years old (19 in Alabama and Nebraska)
- Have a U.S. mailing address
- Provide a Social Security number for identity and credit checks
- Provide a phone number and email address
No minimum credit score is stated. The account is marketed to shoppers with fair or limited credit, but approval is never guaranteed, and any site that promises guaranteed approval for Stoneberry is wrong.
Soft check or hard check?
The online pre-qualification lets you see a credit limit before you order. Pre-qualification tools across the industry normally use a soft inquiry, which does not affect your score. Third-party sources disagree about whether the company later runs a hard inquiry at final approval: some say soft only, others say a hard check follows. The public help pages do not settle it.
How to find out for sure: read the disclosure on the application screen before you submit, and check your credit report 30 days later. A hard inquiry appears in the "inquiries" section with Stoneberry's name or its creditor's name. You can pull reports free at AnnualCreditReport.com.
The two-step approval process
- Pre-qualification. You submit your details and see whether you pre-qualify and for how much.
- Final credit approval on each order. The company states that orders are subject to final credit approval. This is the step where some shoppers are asked for a down payment, sometimes for the full amount of a second order placed soon after the first.
Why a Stoneberry application gets declined
- Recent delinquencies or collections on your credit report
- Identity details that do not match bureau records
- A frozen credit file (lift the freeze temporarily before applying)
- An existing Stoneberry or sister-store account with a past-due balance
- Placing several orders in a short period
If you are declined, federal law entitles you to an adverse action notice explaining the main reasons. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains your rights after a credit denial.
What to do if Stoneberry asks for a down payment
A down payment request usually means the order exceeds what the system will approve on credit alone. You can pay it, reduce the order, or cancel. If the down payment is close to the full price, financing that item on store credit no longer adds much value, and buying it elsewhere is often cheaper.
